At their weekly meeting on March 30, the Fannin County Commissioners court unanimously approved a proclamation declaring April to be Child Abuse Awareness Month in Fannin County. In honor of this month, the Children’s Center has many events and activities planned.
April 10 is “Go Blue Day” in Texas. It is a day where several organizations who serve abused and neglected children are coming together to promote wearing blue in honor of the children they serve. The Children’s Center has blue shirts and yard signs for sale with the slogan “No Excuse for Child Abuse.” The yard signs and most shirts are $10 each. Shirts with bling are $15 and the largest sizes of shirts are a little extra. more
“We encourage everyone to get creative in “showing your blue,” said Sandy Barber, director of the Children’s Center. Past examples include a junior high school using blue solo cups in their fence to spell out “No Excuse for Child Abuse” and local newspapers adding that same slogan to their front page. Businesses, schools, churches and others who have marque signs often add the slogan to their sign for the month too. “We would love it if you would take photos of however you decide to show your blue and send them to us at email@example.com so we can post them too,” said Barber. more
April 10 is also the day for “Stand up for Kids.” This event is organized by the Children’s Center and includes many other groups including schools, nonprofits and local businesses. There will be free bouncy houses, games, food and lots of family fun. Rancho Condarco will bring their petting zoo. Bonham Police Officers will be cooking up hot dogs donated by Fannin Bank and Brookshire’s. The free family fun event will be at Simpson Park in Bonham from 3:30 to 5:30 on April 10. The rain date is set for April 17. more
