Another annual Christmas Drive is all wrapped up! For the volunteers and staff of the Fannin County Children’s Center, holiday plans started early in November. They made phone calls and sent out letters in an effort to find out the Christmas wishes and needs of the children we serve. It’s the first step in an effort which eventually involved many different people of the community coming together to take care of some special kids.
Next, many different individuals, businesses, churches and other organizations gave toys, clothes, coats and shoes. Some people shared their time and effort to shop for selected items.
Folks at the First National Bank of Trenton, Doris Shockley’s State Farm, Pamela Sweet-Richardson Tax Assessor Collector Office and the Fannin County Courthouse made it easy for community members to help out by putting up teddy bear trees at each of their locations. The paper teddy bears contained the Christmas wishes of some of the children we serve. This effort has become a Christmas tradition, as each of these locations has been helping us out in this way for many years.
The United Methodist Women, the Leonard ISD Children's Center, Seven Oaks Nursing Center and the employees of GE Zenith Controls have also had a tradition of helping us out for Christmas. Each of these groups also set up teddy bear trees or put out collection boxes for their members to contribute.
The Bonham School of Dance contributed too this year. For the third year in a row, the dancers put on a performance of the Nutcracker. This year they added a new twist: the price of admission was a new toy for the Children's Center. The toys filled up the back of an SUV!
Nearly fifty people contributed cash, which was used to purchase specific items to fulfill our kids wishes and needs. As the contributions came in, staff took turns shopping at local stores. Bags were filled and then it was time to wrap. Several CASA volunteers came in to wrap the presents for their children and then deliver them to the foster home or relative placement where they are temporarily living. A few packages had to be mailed to children from Fannin County who are living in placements far away. High school students from Trenton High School came to the center to wrap many of the presents. The next day, more volunteers came to the center to wrap the remaining gifts, which was no small feat!
All of these gifts were given to the children and youth who are being served by CASA and the Children’s Advocacy Center. Some of the children helped by this project are living in foster homes, away from family and friends. Other children have gone to live with grandparents or other relatives as a result of abuse or neglect. Many of these families struggle financially when one, two or even three children suddenly come to live with them. In other families, the discovery of sexual abuse in the home has meant the loss of family income when the offender leaves.
Center staff and volunteers take the time to find out about the individual situation, needs, preferences and wishes of each child. The agency also works closely with Child Protective Services and other community agencies to ensure that efforts are coordinated and not duplicated.
We remain very grateful to everyone who donated, shopped, sorted, wrapped, delivered and contributed to this effort. Their efforts made this holiday a much brighter one for our kids!
